The biggest obstacle preventing homeowners from realizing their dream home isn't budget or inspiration—it's a simple metal measuring tape. We often hear clients say they're drawn to the elegance of custom-made curtains, yet also experience a wave of "measurement anxiety." What if the curtains are too short? What if they don't cover the window frame? What if the pleats look "thin"?
At Argahome, we believe the process of creating a beautiful home should be as smooth and natural as the fabric we sew. Measuring curtains isn't some mysterious art, but a simple, precise process. With the right measurements, curtains not only "fit" the window, but they enhance its beauty.
This guide aims to eliminate your confusion and give you confidence. From professional curtain rod installation to calculations tailored to different styles, we'll guide you on how to measure once and achieve perfect results for life.
The Designer’s Secret: It Starts with the Rod
Before you even touch your tape measure, you must decide where your curtains will live. A common mistake when Choosing curtains is measuring only the window frame. In the world of high-end design, we don't dress the window; we dress the wall.
The "High and Wide" Rule
To make your ceilings look taller and your windows look grander, follow the designer's gold standard:
-
High: Install your curtain rod 6 to 10 inches above the window frame (or just below the ceiling/crown molding). This draws the eye upward, creating an illusion of vertical space.
-
Wide: Extend the rod 8 to 12 inches past the sides of the window frame. This allows the curtains to be "stacked" against the wall when open, exposing the entire glass area and making the room feel significantly brighter.
Pro Tip: Before measuring curtain dimensions, check if the curtain rod has already been installed. These are two different measurement methods. Please see our curtain measurement tool page for details.
Step 1: Measuring for Width (The Luxury of Fullness)
The biggest difference between "off-the-shelf" drapes and Custom Curtains is "fullness." Fullness refers to the extra fabric required to create those beautiful, rhythmic folds when the curtains are closed.
How to Measure:
Measure the total width of your curtain rod from end to end (excluding the decorative finials).
-
For Grommet Top, Tab Top, and Rod Pocket curtains: Generally, the curtain width needs to be twice the width of the curtain rod to ensure it doesn't look like a flat sheet when unfolded. That means you need 2.0 times the fullness.
If your curtain rod is 100 inches wide and you need to buy single-sided curtains:
1.0 times fullness: You need 100 inches of curtains;
1.5 times fullness: You need 150 inches of curtains;
2.0 times fullness: You need 200 inches of curtains;
2.5 times fullness: You need 250 inches of curtains.In summary: Remember this formula: Curtain rod width * Fullness / Number of curtain panels
-
For Pleated Styles (Pinch Pleat, Euro Pleat):
At Arga Home, we make it easy. You simply provide the width of the curtain rod and the number of curtain panels you need, and our artisans will calculate the amount of fabric needed to create the pleats. We've already considered the fullness of the pleats in the design.
The formula is: Curtain rod width / Number of curtain panels

Step 2: Measuring for Length (The "Drop")
The length of your drapes defines the "mood" of the room. There are three classic ways to finish the bottom of your curtains, and your measurement will depend on which one you choose.
-
The Floating Look (1/2" above the floor): Clean, modern, and practical. This is ideal for high-traffic areas or homes with pets, as it prevents the fabric from collecting dust.
-
The Floor Kiss (Touching the floor): The most popular choice. It requires exact precision but provides a tailored, professional look that is incredibly sophisticated.
-
The Puddle (2-4" extra fabric): Romantic and opulent. Best suited for linen curtains in a formal dining room or a bohemian bedroom. It hides uneven floors and adds a sense of European grandeur.
Where to start the tape measure?
This depends entirely on your header style:
-
For Grommet Top & Rod Pocket: Measure from the top of the rod to where you want the curtain to end. We then add 1.5 inches of fabric above the rod for the "header."
-
For Pleated Styles (using rings): Measure from the eyelet (the small loop) at the bottom of your curtain rings to the floor. This ensures the rings stay visible while the fabric hangs perfectly below them.
-
For Rod Pocket: Measure from the top of the rod to the floor.

Step 3: Style-Specific Considerations
Your choice of Custom Curtains style impacts your final dimensions. At Argahome, we’ve simplified this through our How to Measure Curtains Guide, but here are the highlights:
-
Ripple Fold Curtains: These curtains require specific tracks. You must measure from the bottom of the track to the floor because the fabric will hang directly below the track to create a seamless, architectural aesthetic.
-
Tab Top & Rod Pocket: These styles sit directly on the rod. Measure from the top of the rod to the floor to ensure the length is accurate.
